Going Vertical: Developing Story Depth with Sherri Hoffman

Thursdays, February 3rd & February 10th, 2022 – 4-5:30 PM PST

This workshop is a look at a strategy of vertical movement, which can be useful for fiction writers in all stages of experience. Vertical movement keys off the horizontal plot points of a story to add pieces of historical context, frame (or reframe) cultural or social values, or to ask hard questions of characters and their circumstances. This additional movement develops depth and relevancy in the storyline so that its unique story-voice may surface. Writers will be asked to read and talk about two published stories (one for each week), participate in a series of in-class writing exercises, and complete one homework assignment that will be discussed during the second workshop.
